Hepatitis C Insight

By  Mary E Salise

Hepatitis C and its corresponding signs and symptoms

It is a viral induced health condition where the liver is inflamed due to infection caused by a hepatitis C virus or "HCV". Like the other types patients with this kind of hepatitis are often asymptomatic which means with no signs and symptoms upon onset and during acute phase; where the duration for acute stage is within the first six months from onset of the disease. In the chronic stage that is after six months from onset and onwards, presence of liver scarring referred to as fibrosis can be observed and if not treated progresses to a more advanced phase with condition referred to as liver cirrhosis. Upon onset of cirrhosis observable symptoms would then be slowly manifested by the patient such as change in skin color appearance to a yellowish one due to the accumulated bilirubin level in the blood medically referred to as jaundice; malaise, itchiness, decreased appetite or "anorexia", weariness and being quickly bruised due to decreased level of clotting factors are significantly observed as well.

Risk Factors

Like the other hepatitis disease, hepatitis C has its predisposing factors. Patients who have been undergoing dialysis of the kidney for a longer period are at high risk to acquire this type of hepatitis. Individuals with jobs associated with blood contact are also predisposed to such disease such as medical health workers sector. People who engaged in an unprotected sex are prone to catch this type of hepatitis. Although according to research this risk factor is rarely prevalent but for person with HIV or STD it is highly prevalent. The sharing of needle injections commonly practiced by prohibited drug users, tattoo fanatics, acupuncture practices predisposes them to hepatitis not just the C type. Blood transfusion and receiving organs from donors with this disease predisposes someone. The simple sharing of personal belongings for hygiene such as toothbrush and razor are considered to be risk factors as well although this is a rare practice. Lastly, the possibility of hepatitis transmission from a pregnant mother to its offspring is in the list too.

Prevention

Even at present there have been no vaccine discovered to be protected from the type C hepatitis. It's only the Hepatitis types A and B have available vaccines. However, the good news is that the disease can be prevented. Its preventive measures are very simple; it only takes to avoid what was mentioned under predisposing factors so as not to be predisposed to the said hepatitis C infectious disease.

Walk Your Way Into Long Life, Good Health and Weight Loss

By Oankar Kundan

Walking is a low impact exercise that is beneficial to everyone, including YOU! Perhaps its greatest benefit comes in the added years to your life. A 2005 study shows that 30 minutes of walking daily adds about 1.3 years to a person's lifespan and 1.1 years without heart ailments.

General practitioners recommend at least 30 minutes of cardio activity, and it is for these very same reasons. If you live a very sedentary lifestyle at home and your job does not demand you to get active then a walking program is what you need. It helps curb lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, heart diseases and cancer aside from prolonging your life.

However, if your goal is to lose weight then you need to walk more and maybe combine it with other exercises. Experts recommend a good 10,000 steps daily if the intention is to lose weight. This will definitely take longer than 30 minutes, depending on how you are walking: shorter if you do brisk and race walking and longer if you are doing leisure walking. Breaking the habit of a sedentary lifestyle may be difficult but if you focus on goals you will get motivated. Set your goals before choosing an appropriate walking program and work your way into achieving those goals.

Use a pedometer if you want to monitor your progress in walking. It's basically a walking gear that counts the steps you made. Most pedometers give you the amount of calories burned during the exercise, the miles you've walked or the time you spent walking. Tracking your progress is made easier with this device. Some pedometers can keep logs of up to 7 days so that you are on top of your game.

If you are a reluctant walker create a walking calendar to motivate you. Print and place this calendar in a prominent place in your home like the fridge or your washroom. After your walks you can record the number of steps made and the amount of time you spent walking. Do this for 6 weeks, as it takes about this amount of time to turn walking into a habit. You can also add calories burned in the calendar. It takes 3500 burned calories to lose 1 pound.

Since it's already getting nippy outdoors make sure you wear the proper attire when you go out for a walk. Some walkers trade the outdoors for the comfort of the treadmill during colder months. If you don't have one in your home, it's time to visit the gym. It all depends on individual preferences where the walk is made (indoors or outdoors) and how to do it (Nordic walking, brisk walking or race walking). Most walkers also evolve and combine other exercises in their routine. The most important thing is to start somewhere - and walking being kindest to the knees, is a highly recommended exercise. So get healthy, be smart and start walking.*

I Lost Over 100 Pounds! 6 Easy Steps To Losing Weight Like Me

By Josette Francis

My mother always used to say, 'a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips my dear.' And boy was she right!! By the age of 25 I was nearing 200 pounds and the weight just kept going up and up and up!

I had tried every diet out there, from the maple syrup diet to the Atkins diet, all to no avail.. the weight didn't seem to be going anywhere. I used to see skinny girls in the mall and feel so jealous that I couldn't dress hot and sexy like them that I would go home and simply cry and eat myself to sleep.

I decided at the age of 30 that I didn't want to spend the rest of my life clinically obese so I decided to make some simple dietary changes and stick to them.

This was the best decision of my life because now at 37 I have dropped to an amazing 120 pounds and I have never looked as hot and sexy as this!

These are the EASY steps I took. They worked for me and I can GUARANTEE that if you stick to them they will work for you too!

My first tip is to always plan your meals for the day. This is vital as it helps you avoid randomly snacking on junky sugary fatty foods. Try to plan your meals the night before so you are prepared for the day's meals as soon as you wake up.

Second is calorie counting. I'm sure you all have heard of or done this before but I found that following a strict daily calorie intake and not exceeding it contributed to my dramatic weight loss. Saturated fats are a sure fire way to obesity. Aim to eat only foods that are low in saturated fat.

Eat 5 small meals per day. These should be significantly smaller than your usual meals. This helps to kills hunger pangs and helps you avoid snacking throughout the day as your stomach will feel fuller for longer. If you do this you will see that your metabolism will be greatly improved.

Sleep! Get at least 7 hours sleep per night, but no more than 8. Depriving your body of sleep may increase levels of the hunger hormone and decrease the hormone which makes you feels full. This results in over eating.

Drinking plenty of ice cold water with each meal makes you feel full faster and also prevents over eating. Ice cold water helps burn all those unwanted calories.

Exercise! Of course! Working a 9 - 5 meant I never had time for exercise so I began walking instead of catching the bus, taking the stairs instead of the elevator and believe it or not having more sex with my husband! This combined with the tips above helped me lose over 100 pounds fast!

Now I get compliments all the time and even get asked out by guys much younger than myself. I haven't felt more confident in myself and its all thanks to making healthy dietary choices. I'm at a good place in my life and I will never look back

Six-Pack Abs Diet Tips!

By David Grisaffi

If your fitness goal is to get the tight and toned stomach of your dreams, then some six-pack abs, diet tips will help you in your endeavor! While it will take some hard work and discipline, knowing what to eat (and what not to) will help you achieve your goal faster than you thought possible. Let's look at a list of the best diet tips below to get you started on your way.

Diet Tip #1: Drink lots of water.

Overeating can spell disaster if you are trying to get into the best shape of your life. As most excess weight tends to settle in the abdominal area, to get a well-defined six pack, you need to have a very low amount of extra fat on your body. The good news is, there is an easy way to keep from filling up on junk throughout the day - drink plenty of water! There is an old adage that you need five glasses of water per day to survive, eight glasses to thrive and 10 to rehydrate. While this is a good general rule of thumb, a more scientific approach can give you even better results. Take your body weight in pounds and drink half of that number in ounces each day. Sound complicated? Well, it's not! For example, if you weigh 200 lbs, then be sure to drink 100 ounces of water each day. As you can see, you may be drinking more than 10 glasses per day, but you will see the difference in your six pack definition by doing so.

Of the available six-pack abs diet tips, this is the most effective as it keeps you feeling full all day long, ensuring you only eat when you truly need nutrition. As an bonus, it helps to keep toxins flushed out of your system, which is another reason your body holds onto fat. It stores these toxins in fat molecules to protect your vital organs. Without toxins to sequester, your body will be less inclined to hold onto its stores of fat, making your six pack stand out!

Diet Tip #2: Never skip breakfast.

Second on the best six-pack abs diet tip's list involves getting a nutritious start in the morning. Breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day, as it gets your metabolism going again after a long night of sleep. During the night, your body slows down its energy use to conserve it. If you don't stoke the fire when you first wake up, your metabolism will tend to be sluggish for the rest of the day. A slow metabolism means weight gain, which is the last thing you want. So, following this tip will keep you burning fat every day, all day.

Diet Tip #3: Don't eat after 9 p.m.

The third of the six-pack abs diet tips cover the end of the day instead. breakfast will rev up your fat-burning engine early in the morning. away from food after 9 p.m. ensures you don't hit it with a lot of fuel right before bed. As previously mentioned, during sleep your body slows down, and it is unable to burn off a large amount of extra calories. within a few hours before bed, your body will normally convert that energy into fat instead. In addition to this harmful trend, most people tend to eat "fun" food late at night, and such appetizing morsels are usually laden with sugar and fat. yourself the extra pounds, and lock the kitchen up tight at night!

Diet Tip #4: Fiber is your friend.

Fourth on the list of the six-pack abs diet tips is fiber. you may have heard a lot about fiber in recent years, this is for a good reason - its great for your health. fiber helps you to feel fuller, longer so it will help you say no to that second helping at the table. are good ways to get the fiber you need? Many healthy cereals now include tremendous amounts of fiber in them, yet they still have a great taste. natural sources of fiber include oats, whole grains and beans.

So, there you a list of some fantastic six-pack abs diet tips you can use to shed the pounds and sculpt your stomach. these guidelines every day, and you'll have that six pack before you know it!

Alternative Cancer Treatment: Effective Tips for Food Intake

By Sari Likha

Alternative cancer treatment is slowly gaining ground with effective research-based techniques that traditional doctors are not wont to tell their patients. These alternative techniques are for those who are bent on winning the battle against cancer.

We have two colon cancer patients in the family. My father-in-law was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2009 and is on alternative cancer treatment with a Chinese doctor. My brother, on the other hand was diagnosed last August 2011 with stage IV colon cancer that has metastasized to his liver. In a life-saving move, his surgeons removed a huge tumor in his colon, 14 nodes in his liver, his entire gallbladder laden with stones and his appendix. Chemotherapy was strongly advised by his oncologist as a post-surgery treatment but my brother declined in favour of alternative medicine. A big part of alternative treatment for cancer lies in what we feed our bodies.

Here are alternative techniques in food intake to treat cancer. They have been proven effective for numerous cancer patients, my family members included:

1. Cancer cells feed on sugar. Refined sugar is best replaced with coconut sugar;

2. Eat lots of vegetables for their fiber content; vegetables remove the protein covering of cancer cells, and thus, make the cancer cells recognizable for killing by alternative cancer therapies;

3. The sugar in fruits may be neutralized by coating the fruits with uncooked rolled oats before they are eaten;

4. Potatoes help fuel cancer proliferation; avoid them by all means;

5. Purple sweet potatoes have cancer-fighting properties due to their anti-cancer purple pigment;

6. Regular rice and white bread are best replaced with unpolished rice and whole wheat bread; make sure the whole wheat bread does not contain sugar;

7. Coffee enema is important to relieve the liver of toxins that promote the growth of cancer cells;

8. It is best to take the following for their anti-cancer properties:

- Extra virgin olive oil - 3 tablespoons in the morning and 3 tablespoons in the evening;

- 15 tablespoons of kefir mixed with 1 tablespoon of squalene taken 3 times a day;

- Spirulina in powdered form taken 1-6 tablespoons in one dose or spread out over the day; it is best added to fresh fruit juice, raw fruit or young coconut juice;

9. Remove micro-toxins from fruits and vegetables with an ozonizer to help inhibit cancer growth in the body;

10. The UV-B rays from the sun from 10 am to 2 pm are therapeutic to a cancer patient; have daily 30-minute walks under the sun during this period;

11. This vegetable juice recipe taken once a day is highly recommended for the patient's daily dose of vegetables; extract the juice of the following using a juice extractor:

- 3 stalks celery

- 1 small sugar beet, peeled

- 1 medium-sized carrot, peeled

- 1 green apple, unpeeled

- 1 medium-sized turmeric, peeled

12. The vegetable juice above must be consumed within 10 to 15 minutes after preparation while their enzymes are still active;

13. Sip vegetable juice with straw; do not gulp it so that it is thoroughly digested;

14. For meat, it is best to avoid fresh water fish or cultured fish;

15. Avoid eating leftover foods as micro-organisms may have already grown in them.

Cancer is like waging war with a treacherous enemy. To win the war, one must know the enemy inside out and formulate a well-thought out battle plan to kill it at its root. Be informed. Eat the right foods the right way. Fight this dreaded disease and win.

Healthy Diet Foods: Five Simple Steps to Healthy Weight Loss

By Mary Ann MacKay

Products that claim they can help us lose weight are often exactly the opposite of what we should be looking for in healthy diet foods. If you want to save money, enjoy satisfying and healthy foods, and lose weight all at the same time, there are some very easy ways to do just that, without drinking goopy diet shakes or choking down unsatisfying meal replacement bars. Here are some tips for finding the best healthy diet foods.

Tip #1: Don't Fall For Packaging Gimmicks
Avoiding anything that is obviously packaged and marketed as a diet food is a good place to begin your quest for healthy diet foods. A good rule to follow involves ingredients. If you can't understand what is in a food, it is probably best avoided, since many processed foods are laden with chemicals. Another good reason to avoid these foods is that they don't make contribute to lifelong healthy eating plans. Choosing foods that help you maintain your health rather than simply drop pounds is an important key to successful long term weight loss.

Tip #2: Eat Fresh
Our bodies were designed to take in the energy that fresh, whole, foods naturally contain. By eating fresh, organic foods in a state as close to nature as possible we provide our bodies with good nutrition, especially the important micro-nutrients that are found in fresh foods. Processed diet foods just cannot compete in this arena.

Tip #3: Eliminate Excess Sugars
Many people today suffer from a serious addiction: an addiction to sugar. If you ever find yourself craving carbohydrates or feeling the urge to gobble down an entire box of cookies or bag of candy, then you are probably battling a huge sugar addiction. Healthy diet foods based on good nutrition eliminate all that excess sugar that is causing your weight loss journey to be such a struggle.

Tip #4: Don't Deprive Yourself
Feelings of deprivation are deadly to any diet plan, which is just one reason why diets that emphasize cutting out entire food groups are rarely long-lasting solutions. When you eat balanced, healthy diet foods that you enjoy, feelings of deprivation will never become a problem. If you know for a fact that the eating plan you have chosen to follow is one that is healthy and wholesome, it is easy to turn your back on old ways. This being said, it's okay to have a piece of high quality chocolate every now and then. Choose the darkest chocolate you can find, let it melt in your mouth, and really enjoy it. A wonderful treat on occasion is part of a healthy life plan.

Tip #5: Make Every Bite Count
Eliminating sources of empty calories that are not providing your body with nutrients is a great way to ensure that you are following a regimen that works the way it is supposed to. Healthy diet foods come in the form of vegetables and fruits, dairy products, whole grains, and quality protein sources. Focus on eating for health instead of simply worrying about what the scale says, and you will soon find yourself looking and feeling better than ever.

Go Organic - 9 Simple Steps Towards Organic Living - Start Loving Yourself Without Breaking the Bank

By  Nadia Y Ruseva
Our body, it knows exactly what it needs. The question is - do we understand its language? Haven't we closed its mouth with synthetic cosmetics, offensive medicines, fast food and stress? If your answer is yes, then very simple, affordable and practical choices will help you in your endeavor to go organic and to deliver your mind and body with health, happiness and beauty. Take a look at these simple ideas for a quick start in organic living.

1. Recharge your sun batteries - the best vitamin D source

Stay out for at least 2 hours a day. This is the time needed for the body to take its necessary amount of vitamin D and fresh air. Our body has its own ways to transform these sunny hours into a feeling of happiness. You may wonder if it is an organic living idea. Yes, it is, if it makes you healthier.

2. Walk barefoot

Another simple, but still great organic living idea. Feet have reflex spots. Through them, barefoot walking does an incredible massage of the spleen, liver, adrenal gland and all the other parts of the body that take care for our well-being. It is also a great pleasure, especially if practiced in nature. Walk barefoot whenever it's possible and prove you are free from pointless fears and prejudices.

3. Get some fresh air in the rooms you live

Organic living is much about taking the toxins out of our lives, why not the air too. Air all the places you stay. The air outside, despite the pollution is several times better than that at home or office. Moreover, if you practice yoga and do breathing exercises, you'll learn not only how to get more energy, but also how to neutralize stress.

4. Give up the perfumes. Choose essential oils

Essential oils are the organic alternative to perfumes, creams and even medicines which are full of chemicals and preservatives. Start with lavender, which among its many properties, is mainly known for being antiseptic, relieves burns, excellent for skin care and is also a lovely fragrance. Go to aromaweb.com for to get tons of essential oils' profiles, recipes and related articles.

5. Read the labels

All cosmetic products have a column full of synthetic chemicals with known and unknown side effects on our bodies. Part of the ingredients used in cosmetics is secret due to which they are not controlled and may even be not on the label. So, be careful and search the web to get all the information you need before you buy a product. One of the best places to get that info is Skin Deep cosmetic database with more than 65 000 products (reviews, ingredients, alerts).

6. Make your own cosmetic products

The good cosmetic is the one that you can eat. It is true that it takes time to prepare, but it's worth it. You may need to buy some of the ingredients at bulk and this may seem quite expensive at first, but think of the quantity that you can produce. At the end of the day, it is cheaper than buying organic cosmetics.

If you haven't done this before, don't be scared. The web is full of recipes and ingredients' sources for homemade soaps, body balms, lotions, shampoos.

7. Color your hair with natural dyes

Be careful with the hair dyes. Hair dyes are one of the most toxic cosmetic products, which should be avoided especially during pregnancy and when breastfeeding. They contain a number of aggressive chemicals - ammonia, peroxide, p-phenylenediamin (PPD), diaminobenzen, which increase the risk of getting a cancer.

Instead, color your hair with plant based dyes - chamomile, coffee, rhubarb roots and a lot more that are gentle to your hair and body and also give vibrant and rich colors.

8. Use organic (mineral) sunscreen

Sunscreen is made of mineral or non-mineral ingredients, or may combine both. Common mineral sunscreen's ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Research shows that zinc oxide is natural and provides excellent sun protection. Mineral sunscreens usually provide better UVA block.

Note that SPF that is higher than 8 makes vitamin D absorption almost impossible.

9. Use fluoride-free toothpaste

Fluoride has little benefits and many risks. The benefits are to the teeth when it's applied locally. Such application, however, involves many more organs than the teeth, from where the risks arise. There are risks for the brain, the bones, the kidneys. Fluoride Action Network is a great source, if you want to know more about the topic.

Here is a very simple and natural homemade toothpaste recipe that does a great job: baking soda + essential oils. Different essential oils are for different purposes. Tea tree and lavender is for killing germs; lemon fights the plaque (use only 1 - 2 drops); peppermint, cinnamon, fennel are for flavor and freshness. Essential oils are highly concentrated. That's why always use tiny quantities and make sure it's a kind that won't harm with ingestion. You can also add xylitol (natural sweetener) for sweetness and coconut oil as a base.

Five Natural Cold Remedies That Work

By  Lisa Pecos
Colds are the most common type of infection in the world, with the average adult contracting about three cold infections every year. Yet despite the common cold's ubiquity, we still have no cure for it. The only surefire way to deal with it is to wait approximately seven to ten days for your body to fend off the infection on its own. However, although science has yet to come up with a solution to the common cold, there are numerous remedies both old and new that can greatly help ease the symptoms of cold, even if they cannot cure it.

For anyone interested in natural remedies to ease cold symptoms and make the infection go away faster, here are five remedies that are worth trying.

1. Herbal teas: Any time you have a sore throat or a cough, it is always a good idea to drink hot beverages. And if you are already going to be drinking something hot, you might as well have one of many varieties of herbal tea that are thought to have cold-fighting properties. Echinacea tea is perhaps the best herb for boosting the immune system and speeding along the cold-fighting process, but other herbs such as ginseng, golden seal, eucalyptus, and ginger can have noticeable effects as well. Just stay away from teas with too much caffeine, as these can cause dehydration, which is bad when you have a cold.

2. Fruit and fruit juice: Your immune system needs plenty of vitamins to fight off the infection, and fruits are the best natural source of the types of vitamins the immune system thrives on. Try to eat plenty of citrus fruits, especially oranges, but remember that practically every fruit contains valuable vitamins. And because it is always good to drink plenty of fluids when you have a cold, fruit juices are helpful as well. Just stay away from juices that contain high-fructose corn syrup and other unnatural elements. Go organic, whenever possible.

3. Light soups: There are good reasons why grandmothers the world over swear by chicken soup as the perfect remedy for the common cold. A good bowl of soup has many vitamins that can help boost your immune system, and the warm broth of the soup helps ease inflammation in the bronchial tubes and can even help fight congestion. Chicken soup works well, but any light, healthy soup can work wonders. Add plenty of pepper to give the soup an extra kick for clearing your nasal passages.

4. Spicy foods: Speaking of spices, spicy foods in general can provide worlds of relief when you are in the throes of a nasty cold. Any food with chili peppers, garlic, or ginger can help clear your nasal passages while also inhibiting the substances that cause inflammation in your body. And eating spicy foods is not just a folk remedy; numerous scientific studies have shown that it works.

5. Steam and humidity: The viruses that cause the common cold thrive on dry air, so you can use moisture to fight back in numerous ways. Use a humidifier in the room where you sleep to add a little moisture to the air. Take extra long, very hot showers and breathe deeply throughout. You can even simply hold your head above a steaming pot of water. Use these methods a few times a day, and your cold symptoms will be lessened.

How To Test For Cancer - It's Better To Be Safe Than Sorry

By Natalie Williams
Cancer screening tests are basically attempts to detect cancer at an early stage to increase the chances of a full recovery before it is too late. There are generic cancer tests to detect signs of cancer in your body and other specialized cancer tests to detect specific cancer types. The exact type of cancer tests you should take depends on which cancer risk group you belong to.

What Is My Risk Of Getting Cancer?There are 3 types of cancer risk groups:

- Low risk ( 20% lifetime risk)

The lifetime risk is the probability of you having a particular type of cancer in your lifetime. When you visit a doctor for cancer screening, you will be classified into one of the groups above according to your gender, age, lifestyle, environment, race and family history of cancer. For example, a man in his fifties who works in a factory, lives in a very polluted city and smokes 10 cigarettes per day may belong to the high risk group. People from different risk groups will have different cancer screening schedules and may start their screening tests at an earlier age or have more frequent tests.

It is important that you look up the cancer screening guidelines of your country to make sure your doctor is planning the right combination of cancer tests. Some tests may not give you all the confirmation you need so having the right tests is critical to detect any signs of cancer as soon as possible. Going through more tests than you need will only result in you spending a lot of unnecessary time and money.

What Are The Cancer Tests I Need To Do?

The tests you will be going through should involve some or all of the following:

- Visual investigation of any lesions on your body, mouth, eyes, genitals, etc.

- Palpation tests to feel for any unusual lumps or tumors in your breasts, prostate, neck and other parts of your body.

- Endoscopy, X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), CT scans, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans or ultrasound scans

- Lab tests like Biological Terraine Assessment (BTA), blood tests, pap smears, Anti-malignin antibody screen (AMAS) or Cancer Marker Tests.

Cancer Can Strike When You Least Expect It

It is important that you follow your cancer screening test schedules religiously to prevent detecting any case of cancer in your body at a later or final stage. Everyone knows that the chances of treating cancer is easier in it's early stages so please do not take the unnecessary risk by being arrogant and lazy about doing your cancer tests. These cancer tests could save you lots of money in the long run and most importantly, they could save your life.

Diets And Cancer: 3 Reasons Why You Could Be Creating More Cancer Cells To Your Body Everyday

By  Natalie Williams
A lot of people believe cancers just happen. Cancers develop if you follow an unhealthy diet full of cancer causing food over a prolonged period of time. Certain food have a lot of cancer promoting substances called carcinogens. In this article, we shall explore 3 common types of carcinogens present in a typical person's diet, what food we should eat and shouldn't eat to prevent cancer.

Acrylamide In Food: Should I Be Worried?

Acrylamide has been used in industries that specialize in the creation of plastic, manufacturing of food packaging and treatment of contaminated water. Unknown to most of us, scientists recently discoverd that acrylamide can be created during high temperature cooking methods like microwaving, frying, roasting and baking. Acrylamide has been attested to cause cancer in animals but no concrete link has been found to indicate this happens in human beings even though acrylamide is extremely unhealthly for our bodies. French fries have been tested to contain the greatest levels of acrylamide, followed by certain brands of potato chips, breakfast cereals, cookies, brewed coffee and toast bread according to the US FDA/CFSAN 2006 Exposure Assessment for Acrylamide.

Sodium Nitrate: Why You Should Avoid It

Sodium nitrate is a standard food additive of processed meat. It is used to prolong the reddish color of meat to make it look more delicious to eat at the expense of your health. During the digestion process of sodium nitrate, nitrosamine is created and this is what promotes the development of cancer cells. Sodium nitrate can be found in processed meat like hot dogs, bacon, ham, bologna, luncheon meat and pepperoni.

Trans Fat: The Worst Fat In The World

Trans fat or trans-fatty acids (TFAs) ranks as the worst kind of fat. The problem with trans fat is because it was transformed from it's vegetable oil form to a semi-solid state through the use of hydrogen. Some companies do this to save money, to improve flavor stability and to extend the shelf life of their products. Our bodies do not readily take in these hydrogenated oils and it takes a lot of extra energy to try to digest it effectively, as a result, sections of it sticks to our arteries if we do not burn it off through exercise. What's worse, trans fat promotes the development of bad cholesterol and reduces the levels of good cholesterol, increasing your risk of heart disease. Trans fat is frequently found in hydrogenated oils, commercially deep-fried food, food with vegetable shortening, partially hydrogenated oils and pastries.

Eating To Prevent Cancer

It is ideal for all of us to restrict or eliminate our consumption of processed food that contain the 3 carcinogens above and other unhealthy substances such as salt, sugar, cigarettes and alcohol. However, it is not easy for people to choose to have a healthy body over the enjoyment of good food. The decision is up to you to decide which is more important to you. At the minimum, consume as much organic vegetables, fruit and meat as you can. Having a diet made of antioxidants, fiber and nutrients from raw vegetables and fruit should help you steer clear from cancer. As a general rule, eat what nature intended us to eat and avoid man-made food.

How to Lower Your Blood Sugar Without Medications

By   Carolyn C Cooper
How to lower blood sugar without medications is the beginning of a new way of living. Most diet programs available today could be adapted to keeping your blood sugar in control. However, you must plan your calorie intake each day to match what your caregiver has prescribed for you whether it is 1200 calories or even 2000 calories depending on your body size, gender and activity level. So to get started let's discuss implementing your sugar control diet.

Meal plan or meal planning is necessary to successfully control blood sugar while becoming healthy from what you eat. The first step is to plan your schedule for Meals. Optimal results are obtained by eating: Breakfast, a mid-morning snack, Lunch, an afternoon snack, Dinner and a "just before bedtime snack". In other words 6 "meals" each day.

Healthy dieting must include foods in proportion from all the food groups: protein, fat, and carbohydrates. These food groups include most vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts and beverages. Protein in small amounts in each and every meal and snack is required to make this sugar control diet work.

Protein is slower to digest, which keeps your metabolism working and helps prevent feeling hungry and deprived. Acceptable proteins include lean red meat, ideally no more that 3 oz.s. three times per week unbreaded fish, unbreaded chicken, raw nuts, eggs, cottage cheese and unsweetened (plain or flavored) yogurt can be used to satisfy your requirement for protein which should be 10% to 35% of your overall diet. Dried beans, nuts and seeds can be considered protein but are sometimes "incomplete" so must be eaten with other foods so care in portion and calories is advised.

Carbohydrates includes fruits, vegetables and grains.

Vegetables: Vegetables, especially raw vegetables are your friend. Raw green and red vegetables are unlimited. Eat as much as you want at any meal or snack. Some vegetables have the reputation for burning more calories than they provide especially Celery. Lettuce, Cabbage, Broccoli, are great "treats" when combined with a homemade yogurt dip flavored with zero calorie spices from your spice rack. Cooked vegetables regardless of color and yellow or orange vegetables and potatoes, rice, bread are in the measure category: 1/2 cup equals a serving or the equivalent of one slice of bread and must be calculated into your daily calorie allowance. The exception is corn creamed or whole kernel which is 1/3 cup. Some fun recipes are available at Cararta's Facts including peanut butter celery sticks.

Fruits: Fruits include almost any fresh fruits or berries except for mango and bananas. No fruit juice...except as listed under beverages! Fresh means fresh so no canned, dried fruit. Can use frozen if no sugar added.

Grains: Some diets restrict bread, oatmeal, grits and rice however I often have a sandwich for lunch including two slices of bread, all you have to do is make sure to include these calories in your daily allowance and have a protein filling and you will be fine. The body needs a certain amount of carbohydrate for quick energy while waiting for the protein to digest. A small baked potato with 1 tablespoon of regular sour cream with dinner is fine. Again just keep track of what you eat!

Beverages: Water is great!. Unsweetened tea is fine. If you count the calories you can have fresh fruit juices no added sugar diluted with water...half water-half juice (grape is good) but count the calories! I love coffee, but found more than a cup per day seemed to slow down my weight loss. Your choice!

Not listed but important is fat. Every diet should include a certain small amount of fat. You can get this from lean red meat, oily fish, certain nuts, olive oil (salad dressing) canola oil...an amount daily equivalent to 3 pats of butter! Fat helps with sugar control as it's digestion takes longer than carbohydrates so it helps maintain a level sugar rate with fewer spikes and lows. Forget the fake "butters" what is in them is worse than fat!

While on the food part of this program: I personally do not like "lite" fat free, reduced fat, sugar free or artificially sweetened anything. Besides their unpalatable taste, they often contain more calories than the original because of attempts to make them"taste"acceptable. It has become accepted that some of these altered foods can cause digestive problems (diarrhea when over consumed). Decide for yourself.

Final recommendation regarding the diet part of the control blood sugar plan. There are certain supplements and herbs that can help control blood sugar. Two that I use are Cinnamon and Chromium. Do your own research or talk to a nutritionist.

Exercise: Exercise is necessary to lose weight and control blood sugar and stop taking medications. Just like the scheduled meal plan, exercise should be on the "menu" every day. The easiest, least expensive and probably the best exercise is Walking. Walking uses your whole body, especially if you swing your arms when you walk. Thirty minutes a day or the equivalent is required. Riding a stationery bicycle if you can't walk or don't have a place to walk will meet your exercise requirements. If you can't walk for 30 minutes, break it up into smaller amounts, gradually increasing until you can walk for 30 minutes.

Adhering to this diet will improve your life by improving your blood sugar level. If you are currently taking medications for your diabetes, keep a close check on your sugar levels and consult with your caregiver regarding adjustments to medications. Losing weight usually reduces blood sugar levels and leads to having more energy and less of that tired feeling common with uncontrolled diabetic blood sugar levels.

A footnote: If you are overweight or have close relatives with diabetes and uncontrolled blood sugar, there is the possibility that using this diet will help prevent diabetes or delay the onset of diabetes.

Finally follow your scheduled eating times using the correct food combinations and do a little walking and you will soon know how to control blood sugar levels without medications!

I am a Retired RN who has lived with Adult Onset diabetes for 30 years without taking medications and have outlined my diet and exercise program for reducing, controlling and lowering blood sugar levels. My site Diabetes Diet has more information to help in your quest for sugar control http://joellafightsdiabetes.com/

My younger sister's Joella's fight with diabetes is detailed in a blog, Cararta's Facts with recipes and the ups and downs of trying to live on a Diabetic diet. She has an ongoing problem with combining the correct amount of food and exercise necessary to control her weight, blood sugar and diabetes.

Cell Phones and Brain Cancer: Is There a Link?

By  Shauna Arthurs

With the recent announcement by WHO (world health organisation) about the potential dangers of cell phone radiation, we are all naturally concerned, especially those of us who use cell phones regularly and/or who have kids with cell phones. What is safe, we wonder, in terms of use, cell phone type and exposure? Are some cell phones safer than others, and are there ways in which we can limit the dangers by changing our usage patterns?

While the answers are still coming in, there are things we can do to help protect ourselves. These tips come from a variety of sources, including a brain scientist who has recovered from brain cancer (Dr. David Servan-Schreiber - if you have not yet read his book, Anticancer, A New Way of Life go get it! It's an excellent read for anyone wishing to prevent cancer, or already dealing with the health challenges cancer presents). Simultaneously, we are all terrified of cancer but somehow in denial that it will ever touch us personally. It's time we look clearly at the rampart cancer rates of the last decade and take as many steps as we can personally to protect our health.

When it comes to this health issue, we are all exposed to radiation in varying degrees, even those of us who do not have a cell phone. In North America, unless you live in the remote wilds and are completely off the grid, you're likely affected, even if from cell towers and criss-crossing signals in the air. Experts are telling us that cordless phones pose similar risks, and it s only as more studies come to completion that the alarming statistics are becoming available. Nonetheless, mobile phones and smart phones are here to stay, so let's do what we can given that reality.

For one thing, most mobile phone manufacturers now offer a protection rating on their phones, as consumers become increasingly aware and concerned. Ask your provider about your specific phone and be sure to check the rating of any phone you buy. Other tips include using a headset rather than putting the phone directly to your ear when talking, and leaving the phone away from your wear until someone answers; according to experts the signal is stronger when the phone is ringing, before it connects. The signal is also stronger when you are between cell towers, so if the connection is bad hang up and try later when it's safer. For children and teens with developing brains, limit cell phone use and if anything, encourage texting over speaking (who ever thought anyone would say that?).

Shauna writes about cell phone safety at her cell phones students website. You can also find out more about brain health at her health and vitamin site. Take your own health seriously and be your own health advocate, so you can live the best life possible and have the vitality to achieve your dreams!

Screening For Skin Cancer and The Risks Involved

By Kum Martin

Screening for cancer is often recommended if you have a family history of the disease. It will help in finding the cancer early and also reduce the chances of succumbing to the disease. Doctors even use certain types of screen tests to find cancer in some patients. However, these are primarily restricted to clinical trials that allow doctors to figure out which people have the least risk of getting cancer. But, the biggest benefit of a cancer screening test is to detect the cancer before it begins showing symptoms. When patients receive early treatment for the disease, it improves the chances of recovery and decreases the possibility of dying from the cancer. That is why having a screening test for skin cancer is extremely important. In fact, skin cancer is quite widespread in the United States, with 1 million people diagnosed with it each year.

Screening for skin cancer involves several steps and is not just restricted to a laboratory test. Physically checking the skin can help identify skin cancer early. Doctors recommend that patients check their skin every month for any abnormal changes, which should be brought to their attention immediately. In addition, those people who have had skin cancer previously should have regular skin checks performed by their doctors.

If the doctor finds something abnormal about a particular patch of skin, a biopsy will be performed. A part of the abnormal skin is sent to the laboratory for checking, where the pathologist checks it under the microscope to see whether the skin cells have turned malignant.

Typically, it is possible to detect cancer without having a biopsy done, as skin melanomas tend to grow under the epidermis and never penetrate the dermis. It is possible to cure skin cancer if it has not metastasized to any other part of the body.

However, there are some risks involved when it comes to screening tests for skin cancer. Some of the tests may not be able to detect the cancer. Just because a screening test detects cancer, it does not guarantee that your health will improve or you will live longer. This is especially true if the cancer has reached an advanced stage. Some of the skin cancers do not show any symptoms and may never become life-threatening. However, when these cancers are found through screening tests, they are treated. The treatment for cancer has several undesirable side effects and may not offset the benefits of the treatment. Also, it is possible that the screen test gives a false negative result. At times, the test may show that cancer is not present when it is and this may cause delay in getting the right treatment for the malignancy. Another possibility is that screen test may show a false positive result when there is no cancer present. This causes the person to go through an unwanted biopsy and then suffer from anxiety until it is conclusively diagnosed that the person is not suffering from the cancer.
